Crypton is the recognised brand leader in Engine Diagnostics, Tuning and Emissions testing, with some 100 years experience in testing engines.

Formed in 1890 under the name of Newton's to manufacture electric motors and generators, the company then expanded into the development of testing equipment for the motor industry in the 1920's. The company was sold to Lancashire Dynamo and Crypto, who wanted to expand their garage equipment interests; the company was renamed CRYPTON.

From this early involvement Crypton grew to play a prominent role in shaping the history of engine diagnostic equipment, soon establishing itself as a household name and with the Crypton brand becoming synonymous with the testing of engines.

The role of engine diagnostics has evolved over the years, from its origins in tuning through to the fault finding, diagnostics and emissions control of today. Crypton has remained at the forefront of this development, providing innovative and quality products to meet the needs of the garage market.

Innovative development continues to be a cornerstone of the Company, which has ensured continuity of market share as the role of its products has changed with the developments in vehicle technology.

Some of the major product landmarks include:

  • Production of one of the world's first engine testers in 1936.

  • Pioneering the concept of 'area testing' and the use of oscilloscopes in the 1950's.
  • Research into computer controlled equipment in the 1960's.
  • Development of a best selling, advanced, non-oscilloscope analyser and the introduction of on-board electronic systems testing in the 1970's.
  • Introduction of a unique microprocessor controlled automatic tester in the 1980's.
  • Innovative development of PC based testing with serially connected measurement modules in the early 1990's.
  • Launch of the use of handheld ECM testers for the general market.
  • Pioneering the concept of information workstations in the late 1990's.

Dieseltune has been manufacturing diesel diagnostic products for over 40 years. Many innovative diagnostic tools have been produced over the years, but a significant addition to the range was introduced in October 1992 - the DX.210 smokemeter established Dieseltune as a world leader in the field of diesel engine emissions analysis. This model has now been successfully used in virtually every country that has an emission control program. A digital version of this popular smokemeter was introduced 1998 - the DX.230, which enabled the new measuring head to be connected to a PC.

Wheelforce was set up in 1982 to provide wheel and tyre service equipment to the motor industry and rapidly became recognised as one of the leading suppliers of top quality products backed up with a high level of support and field service.

Dieseltune and Wheelforce joined Crypton in April 2001 to create one of the largest independently owned automotive equipment manufacturers in Europe:

Facility and Resources

The company's headquarters are based within the Crypton Technology Business Park at Bridgwater, Somerset, in England, with development, production sales and marketing resources. The company also has a strong training emphasis, with a purpose built training centre for providing customer product training and for development.

All our products are built and tested to a consistently high quality - Crypton is registered to ISO9001 by ISOQAR and, as such, we are constantly striving to improve standards and our customer service.

Marketing

The increasing emphasis on emission legislation has seen Crypton play a major role in this area, with several members of the team playing key roles in the development of legislation through working party participation. As a leading supplier to the industry Crypton enjoys significant market shares in most of the legislative emission markets throughout the World.

Crypton also provides a strong customer support function, with experienced staff providing telephone help line support to both customer base and distribution network alike.

Development of co-operative links with vehicle manufacturers and key accounts is an important area of activity for the business, with a wide range of approvals from all the major vehicle manufacturers gained for the products as well as major sales commitments from breakdown organisations and fast-fit centres.

This expertise has not only seen the widespread supply of Crypton products to most vehicle manufacturers, but has also gained the Company significant success with specific developments, for example:

  • GM (USA): Expansion of a PC-based information system with fault finding modules.

  • HYUNDAI: Provision of an automated test line at the Seoul engine plant.
  • RAC: Supply of a handheld scan tool for patrol breakdown use.
  • ROVER: Development and supply of on-board electronic system testing equipment.

Crypton has a comprehensive distribution network throughout Europe and most of the world markets, with the emphasis on providing total support for the respective market through the distributor's service and support resources, backed up by Crypton's own export support team.

The Future

Crypton continues to play an important role in the development of vehicle system testing and will continue to be at the forefront of the industry as the needs of the market and legislation increase.

The increasing concern with the environment will dictate increasing legislative control and testing of vehicle emissions, which in turn will provide opportunities for Crypton to develop and supply products.

Already the EU has initiated working groups to look at on-board diagnostic testing and emission testing. With the Company continuing to play a key role in these groups, the involvement in formulating future testing strategies will ensure that Crypton will continue to remain In Tune With The Future
