New European emissions standards (Euro 6) affects the MOT test from May 2018.
As part of the global challenge to improve air pollution, the European emissions standards sets strict exhaust emissions limits to help reduce the level of harmful pollutants produced by passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in the EU.
What is Euro 6?
Emissions standards date back to 1970 when Euro 1 was introcuced. Euro 6 is the sixth instalment of the European emissions standards that was introduced in September 2015. All new registered vehicles after this date would have to conform to these standards.
What does Euro 6 mean for MOT Testers?
As these vehicles reach their first MOT, all MOT stations will be required to test the emissions to the Euro 6 standards for both petrol and diesel vehicles. However, diesel vehicles have been hit hard with Euro 6 due to their impact to the air quality, resulting in a dramatic drop to a maximum of just 80mg/km, compared to 180mg/km that was previously required to meet the Euro 5 standards.
This has also resulted in several emissions units being unable to measure to the lower limits and will therefore need to be replaced. Those units capable of measuring to the lower limits will require updating with a Euro 6 software upgrade. MOT stations are responsible for upgrading their machines by the 20th May 2018, as well as their emissions gas analyser by the same date.

What are the next steps in preparing for the new emissions standards?
If your emissions unit is compatible for Euro 6, you will need to contact Crypton or your local distributor to order a software upgrade for your machine. You will need to do this in advance of the 20th May 2018 deadline to minimise disruption.
If your emissions unit is NOT compatible, you will need to purchase a new emissions tester. However, if you have a CCP600 series, you have the option to purchase our hardware upgrade package. This includes:
- Windows 10 PC
- Gas analyser module
- Oil temperature probe
- Euro 6 software
Crypton’s CCP800 Combined Emissions Analyser for diesel and petrol engines, and CSP800 smoke only diesel unit are market leading emissions testers and come with the new smoke software upgrade, the latest MOT update and 3 years warranty.
DVSA have announced that they are aware of two issues that garages are facing:
- Availability of upgrades following order by 20th May
- Not receiving new smoke meters following order by 20th May
For both situations, DVSA have highlighted that a workaround is possible until 30th September 2018 if an upgrade or new meter have been ordered. During that period, you may be asked to provide evidence that an upgrade or new equipment has been ordered. In any other circumstances of your equipment not being able to test to the new standards, you cannot carry on MOT testing.
